The school assigned to this year's Cooking Up a Storm (2) group is Carr Junior School in Acomb, York. During the previous two weeks, a lesson plan was devised for a full school week of afternoons for a class of Year 3 pupils. The afternoons at Carr Junior School are in such a way that there is a first half session and a second half session, split by a ten-minute playtime break.
Originally, there were six members in this group but, unfortunately, there were only five by the start of the school week. Each member of the group chose a country to create and arrange their lesson plans around but all held a common theme. The countries chosen were America, India, Japan, Mexico and Morocco.
The lesson plan was as follows:
Monday
First Half: Introducing ourselves to the class and explaining what would be happening in each afternoon, key facts about England, split into the country groups and work on fact worksheets
Second Half: Colour in country flag and wordsearch worksheets
Tuesday
First Half: Tell the class that staff from the Marriott Hotel would be giving a presentation in the second half and prompt questions, Health and Safety in the Kitchen, True/False Quiz.
Second Half: Marriott Hotel staff to describe what they do, how the hotel works and answer questions (*)
Wednesday
First Half: Pin the Plate on the Place activity, Money Matters activities and Language work in groups
Second Half: Painting flags and what they've learnt about their countries so far
Thursday
First Half': Safety before cooking and Health and Safety recap, food preparation
Second Half: Cooking
Friday (*)
First Half: Cooking recap, creating individual recipe sheets
Second Half: Evaluation sheet, handing out congratulatory certificates, pinata games
(*) - indicates where there were changes to the lesson plan:
- The Marriott Hotel chose not to send staff to the school for the talk. Extra learning resources about healthy eating and safety in the kitchen were found for this.
- For the second half of Friday afternoon, the class must attend a demonstration being held by the school. The group were not informed of this until Wednesday. Activities planned for this time were cut but the project will still be drawn to a fun and interesting close.
